Next Steps

These next steps are to be used for discussion purpose only and are not intended to map out the specific approach to the development of cross-industry standards. With this report the Sector Council Steering will already have advanced significantly in the process to establish a cross-industry strategy to put in place management competencies and skills for small business owner/operators. However, there are processes that need to be implemented to continue to evolve this project. Many of these next steps are listed in the recommendations in the executive summary.

  • The competencies, skills and performance criteria need to be reviewed and strengthened. More work needs to be done to complete flush the detail.
  • Work needs to be done to establish the necessary committees to provide the appropriate buy-in mechanisms for those stakeholders that agree to participate in the process.
  • After completion of a draft of the management skills the appropriate working groups need to validate the standards. Mush of this process in part of Appendix II - the Standards Development Process.
  • The Standards Development Process needs to be modified to fit a broader Cross-Sectoral approach to competency, skills and standards development.
  • The working group needs to discuss the issue of certification and accreditation. For some standards this level of competency is not required. There needs to be a framework (guiding principles) established for what and how the management skills are to be used.
  • The working group provides an opportunity to raise other cross-industry issues in the area of small business and management skills that could be addressed by the Sector Council Steering Committee.
