Other Federal Government Initiatives

  • Many initiatives in other federal government departments also relate to the issue of integrating internationally trained workers in the Canadian workforce. Some of these are listed below.

    Canadian Heritage programs
Canadian Heritage ’s Multiculturalism Program contributed almost $1 million in funding in 2004 to the British Columbia Internationally Trained Professionals Network and the Policy Roundtable on Mobilizing Professions and Trades in Ontario for a two-year (2004–2006) project to build provincial networks of internationally trained professionals across Canada.

Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) programs
Together with Citizenship and Immigration Canada, DFAIT has launched the Live, Learn and Succeed (LLS)—Better Serving International Students Portal, which focuses on leveraging existing federal and provincial services for international students.

    Industry Canada programs
This department funds Campus Canada’s project entitled LeARN (Learning Assessment and Recognition Network), an online support service to facilitate mobility and assessment and the recognition of formal and non-formal learning through an alliance of post-secondary institutions.

    Labour Mobility Initiatives
HRSDC manages Apprenticeship and Labour Mobility Initiatives, under which the federal, provincial and territorial governments, training institutions, educators, business, labour and equity groups work together to promote skilled trades and apprenticeships and to improve labour mobility in Canada. The ultimate objective is to find solutions to ensure an adequate supply of skilled trade workers and to allow qualified, skilled Canadian workers to practice their respective trades anywhere in Canada. The Red Seal Program en courages standardization of provincial and territorial apprenticeship training and certification programs.
